There’s something magical about stepping into the warmth of a family’s first home together, a space buzzing with the fresh joy of change. Recently, I had the honor of capturing a beautiful in-home newborn photoshoot for a young Kansas City family of three—and their lovable doodle dog, Toby. This session was everything I strive for as a photographer: authentic, relaxed, and brimming with honest emotion.
We began the session in the living room, the heart of their home, where natural light streamed through the windows and sweet dog ran excitedly on the couch cushions, excited to share his new baby brother. Mom held her baby boy with an ease and tenderness that was mesmerizing. Dad sat close, his eyes often drifting toward her, full of admiration and pride. These small, quiet moments of connection are what make in-home sessions so special. No stiff poses, no pressure—just the genuine love and wonder of a family starting their journey together.
Next, we stepped outside to the front porch. This home is more than just a house; it’s where countless memories will be made, from first steps to bedtime stories and everything in between. It was important to capture the family in this meaningful space, creating portraits that will one day be cherished for the story they tell. With the Kansas City sunshine and the front porch as our backdrop, we froze those fleeting moments of early parenthood.
The nursery was our final stop, a room filled with personality and thoughtfulness. Its cozy green-and-blue mural wallpaper set the tone, complemented by heirloom-quality and utter warmth. It’s always a joy to document the care and intention new parents pour into creating a space for their baby, and this room was no exception. Watching Mom cradle her son in this special space brought a peaceful energy to the photos. Dad's quiet pride and awe were palpable, a love that seemed to fill the entire room.
And then there was Toby—their energetic, love-filled doodle—who bounded into the nursery, determined not to miss out on the action. His playful enthusiasm brought an extra spark to the session, his grinning face perfectly completing the family portraits. Can't you feel his joy?!
As I photographed their sweet baby boy’s tiny fingers and toes, I couldn’t help but reflect on how quickly this newborn phase passes. His coos and facial expressions, so fresh and fleeting, will soon change as he grows. These moments are here for only a short while, but capturing them in photos preserves them forever. As a first time mom, I had no concept of not just how quickly your baby's details will change, but of how much you forget. and of how much you yourself change in the process. These photos not only serve as keepsakes, but as reminders of a point in time. A monumental change in life. A moment frozen for you to tap back into at any time, and marvel at how far you and your family have come.
It’s an honor to witness and document the beginning of a family’s story. This in-home newborn session was a perfect mix of coziness, connection, and celebration of life. These are the kinds of memories that stay with us—the warmth of a home, the joyful chaos of a dog’s love, and the quiet wonder of new parents soaking it all in.
